We believe it’s our responsibility and our calling to be stewards of our natural resources. Drawing on our collective experience and expertise in forestry, we grow and harvest a range of desirable species with the utmost care and longevity in mind. Our approach is balanced and thoughtful—so you’re assured your floor comes from a sustainable, environmentally-focused process you will feel good about.
Why Forests Matter
In a nutshell, we depend on forests to live. The forest plants produce the oxygen we need, and absorb the carbon dioxide we exhale and emit through pollution. Forests filter the water we drink and they keep us (and the earth!) cool by providing shade and absorbing CO2 that fuels global warming.
Forests are home to nearly half of the world’s species, including some of the most endangered birds and mammals. Bugs and worms work nutrients into soil and birds and bees spread pollen and seeds.
People live in forests–some 300 million worldwide, including an estimated 60 million indigenous people whose survival depends almost entirely on native woods.
Forests create jobs–worldwide, 1.6 billion people rely on forests for their livelihoods with 10 million directly employed in forest management or conservation.
Forests also fight flooding, refill aquifers, block wind, stabilize soil, give us medicine and feed us.
Forests create majesty–natural beauty may be the most obvious (and yet least tangible) benefit a forest offers. But perhaps it is this splendor and magnificence that will convince us to appreciate and preserve old-growth forests for future generations.
What is a Sustainable Forest?
A sustainable forest is a forest that is carefully managed so that felled trees are replaced with seedlings that eventually grow into mature trees. This is a carefully and skillfully managed system that necessitates great care is taken to ensure the safety of wildlife and to preserve the natural environment so that forests continue to provide natural materials for us all.
The Role of the Forest Stewardship Council
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) sets standards of responsible forest management, using the power of the marketplace to protect forests for future generations. The Forest Stewardship Council mission is to promote environmentally sound, socially beneficial and economically prosperous management of the world’s forests. FSC’s vision is that we can meet our current needs for forest products without compromising the health of our forests. The council has developed a set of 10 principles that apply to FSC-certified forests around the world. You can find the 10 principles here.
Over the past 20 years, FSC has earned a reputation as the most rigorous, credible forest certification system. By creating demand for products from responsibly managed forests, FSC is helping protect forests for future generations.
Shannon & Waterman’s Role in Sustainable Forestry
Every wide plank floor crafted by Shannon & Waterman has its beginnings from family-owned, old growth forests. For generations, we’ve masterfully managed these forests for true sustainability—ensuring that we protect our forests and environment for future generations.
All our wood is selectively harvested and with our vertically integrated process, and we use 100% of the wood that we saw. The land is farmed and cultivated like a garden and only the mature trees are selectively harvested so that the rest of the trees can continue to grow and prosper until they are ready to be cut. Upon request, many of our products are available FSC® certified.
From responsible forestry practices to authentic craftsmanship and manufacturing techniques, the Shannon & Waterman difference is evident in each and every wide plank floor we create. Allow our wood flooring consultants to guide you through wood selection, design requirements and every aesthetic consideration, as well as installation and long-term care of your custom floors.
